Train timetable changes first stage effective 27 April 2008
Date Published: Monday, 14 April 2008
Connex and the State Government have announced an ambitious three stage timetable and operating improvement program that makes for a better, harder working rail network to help manage growing patronage.
The first stage, which introduces 105 new services a week, starts on Sunday April 27 and focuses on creating additional capacity for the evening peak, as well as the running of six carriage trains up until at least 7pm on all lines* to create more space for passengers.
It also sees an upgraded train and a revamped timetable for the Stony Point line.
The second stage will commence in November and will see changes to the way train services use the City Loop. Thirteen train lines run into just four through the City Loop, which creates congestion, slows trains and causes delays as trains cross paths.
All peak hour Werribee services will run direct to Flinders Street from November easing City Loop congestion. This means some Werribee passengers will change at North Melbourne which is currently being redeveloped to operate more efficiently as a transfer hub. Those whose destination is Southern Cross or Flinders Street Stations will experience a faster journey.
All trains on the Epping and Hurstbridge lines will travel one direction clockwise all day around the loop, instead of changing direction from morning to afternoon. One-way City Loop running will reduce congestion between the city and Jolimont Station and allow for an additional morning peak train on the Epping and Hurstbridge lines.
For a full list of the service changes, view Train timetable changes: from Sunday, 27 April 2008
* except the Williamstown and Alamein shuttles which will still operate in three car configuration between the peaks and after about 6pm.
