KUALA LUMPUR: India's Ircon International Ltd (IRCON) has bagged a $1
billion worth contract to build a double track line in Malaysia.
Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said the 3.45 million
ringgit project will involve the construction of track linking
Seremban to Gemas.
The announcement coincided with the two-day visit of Defence Minister
A K Antony.
The 100 km long link project comes after IRCON lost a similar offer a
few years ago to a local company.
In 2003, IRCON was given a letter of intent by the Malaysian
government for a project in Northern Malaysia. However, the contract
was finally awarded to a local company MMC Gemuda.
"One outstanding issue has been resolved, now Malaysia expects
greater momentum between the two countries in 2008," officials said
after a meeting between Najib and Anthony this morning.
