Assurance On Implementation Of Three Penang Projects

PENANG, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Friday gave his assurance that the construction of the second Penang Bridge, Penang Outer Ring Road (PORR) and the monorail projects in the state will be implemented despite facing several problems.

Although there was a delay in the construction of several major projects in the state, the Prime Minister said the government was committed to their implementation and completion as planned.

"I admit that there are several problems faced in implementing these projects but we are determined to complete them," he said in his speech at the Chinese New Year gathering organised by the Penang MCA and Gerakan, here.

He apologised for the delays and said that Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop had submitted the report on the projects and ensured that they would proceed.

The Second Penang Bridge will link Batu Kawan in Seberang Perai and Batu Maung on Penang island. Construction work started this year and the project is expected to be completed in January 2011.

The PORR project involves the construction of a 17-kilometre dual-lane highway to be implemented in two segments on the island, namely the interior segment and the coastal segment.

The monorail project will link the main tourism areas in Batu Feringghi and Bayan Lepas, passing through several housing areas and settlements in Tanjung Tokong, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Jelutong and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in Gelugor, and Bayan Baru.

The monorail project will also involve routes to Weld Quay passing through the town centre at Komtar and Jalan Datuk Keramat to Paya Terubong in Ayer Itam.
