Monday afternoon September 21, 2009, the fourteenth day of the road side switch in Samoa, with one Nissan UG780 and three Toyota DA116 waiting at Salelologa Wharf in Savaii (below) for the arrival of the last ferry from Upolu Island. Most of the 150 plus wooden bodied buses in Samoa have now had their passenger doors moved to the left hand side retaining the driving position on the left. Several imported Daewoo, Hyundai and at least one Coaster have had the same treatment while one Daewoo in Upolu has had the drivers position relocated to the right a la New Zealand and Australia.
A number of folks from outside Samoa have pondered on the possibility of second hand buses being purchased from overseas but there is an age limit on all vehicle imports so that may not occur, you never know. Last week, only on the local TV, and not in the papers, was an interview with Ritchies from NZ who were talking buses with the government, but nothing further has been heard on the matter so far.
