Ministry dismisses southern hub’s plan to move railway stat
The transport ministry has proposed to keep two railway stations in Ho Chi Minh City instead of relocating them to a neighbouring province as city leaders had previously suggested.
Last month, the HCMC administration submitted a plan to the Ministry of Transportation to approve the transfer and agglomeration of Hoa Hung Railway Station in District 3 and Binh Trieu Railway Station in Thu Duc District to Di An Railway Station in neighbouring Binh Duong Province in a bid to ease traffic gridlocks.
The plan suggested building a provisional monorail system to replace the existing tracks that currently crosscut many major roads in the city, causing heavy congestion.
But the ministry said in its note to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung that the city should instead consider erecting an elevated railway system to connect the two stations, arguing that Hoa Hung and Binh Trieu railway stations serve an inter-provincial railway network and therefore the move would face much difficulty.
The location of Di An Railway Station fails to meet fundamental requirements of a downtown station, while relocation would incur great expenses, the ministry reported.
Other experts have also raised objections to the transfer plan outlined by the HCMC People’s Committee.
An official from the Transport Development and Strategic Institute, Tran Xuan Dung, advised that relocation is not a feasible policy.
Thousands of city residents would have to use alternative routes to reach Di An Railway Station for travel, increasing overall traffic density, he said.
