Bangkok - A bus chartered Saturday to take mourners to the funeral of a popular Buddhist monk in Thailand's Kanchanaburi province overturned at a sharp curve, killing nine people and injuring 27 others, police reports said.
Police said the accident occurred about 7:00 am (000 GMT) on the Thong Phaphume Songkha Buri Road in Kanchanaburi, about 150 kilometres west of Bangkok, reported The Nation news website.
The bus driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle as it was speeding downhill and hit a sharp curve, causing it to overturn on the side of the road.
Of the nine people who died in the accident, seven were women. The driver fled the scene.
Police said the bus was heading to the funeral of Luangpor Janthima, a famed Buddhist monk.
