PEOPLE’S CHOICE ... Locals prefer to travel by train to nearby destinations.
FOR the people in the east coast of Malaysia, the railroad is the most convenient means of transportation.
Jahid Abdullah, 22, travels by train every month from Kuala Lipis to Merapoh, which is located in between Kuala Lipis and Gua Musang. He has to travel frequently to Merapoh as he works as a truck driver who transports raw materials for a gold mine.
“Travelling by train is more comfortable and safe compared to other means of transportation,” he says.
He said that travelling by bus would cost RM12, whereas travelling by train would only cost him RM6. He added that it was also safer to travel by train as there is a high risk of accidents on the roads.
A Malay man who only wanted to be identified as Su, 45, is a frequent traveller on the KTM train. He works for a private logging agency and travels to work in Gua Musang every afternoon. He catches the train back to his home in Kuala Lipis every night.
He also added that travelling by train is much safer as accidents are very unlikely to occur.
He said that he had heard many stories about tree falling and landslides on the railroads, and that he was lucky enough to not have come across such calamities and hopes not to.
“The trains never fail to be filled up during the public holidays and festival seasons,” stated Su.
Ardif Suwahito, 28, who works as a bulldozer operator in a palm oil estate, travels to Gua Musang by train every month.
It has been his routine for the past four years.
He chose to travel by train is because he finds it more comfortable and affordable compared to other transportation.
