Early-morning subway accident disrupts Tokyo commute

Wednesday 09th September, 11:58 AM JST

   TOKYO —

A railway maintenance train bumped into an unoccupied passenger train at a Tokyo subway station early Wednesday morning, disrupting the rush-hour commute in and around the downtown area. No one was injured in the collision, which occurred at 4:08 a.m. at Toyocho Station of the Tozai Line, where the 10-car train was parked ahead of its service, said officials of subway system operator Tokyo Metro Co.

The accident delayed the start of the line’s full service for the day until 9:57 a.m., affecting an estimated 290,000 commuters, they said.

The officials said the four-car maintenance train was traveling at over 40 kilometers per hour, above the speed limit, approaching the station and its operator had forgotten that the passenger train was there. The operator put on the brakes too late, they added.

The accident broke a connector of the passenger train.

Tozai translates to East-West. This is one of the busier subway lines and has connections to the JR Chuo All stops lines at the western end from Nakano, and the JR Sobu and private Toyo railway at the eastern end in Chiba prefecture.
