TWENTY-three tourists on board a bus near Uluru in the central Australia outback were evacuated shortly before the bus was destroyed by fire.
The driver told police he was travelling along the Lasseter Highway about 9km from Yulara at about 1pm (CST) yesterday when he heard crackling coming from the engine bay beneath his feet.
The man stopped the Mitsubishi Coaster when he noticed smoke and evacuated the passengers, police said.
He then attempted to to douse the blaze with a fire extinguisher but removed the rear trailer when it became clear the fire had taken hold.
Police and fire crews were called to the scene however he bus was completely destroyed.
