First rail service linking NE Thailand and Laos opens March 5

BANGKOK, Feb 27 (TNA) - The first passenger rail service linking the northeastern Thai border province of Nong Khai and the Lao border town of Thanaleng will officially be opened on March 5, State Railway of Thailand (SRT) governor Youdtana Tupcharoen said on Friday.

The opening ceremony of the rail service will be presided over by Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, he said.

A total of four passenger train services -- two leaving from Nong Khai and two from Thanaleng -- will be offered to passengers daily and travelling time will take 15 minutes, Mr. Youdtana said.

The train fare for an air-conditioned second class journey is Bt80 per trip, while for ordinary third class it is Bt20, he said.

It is projected that revenue from train fares would be more than Bt10 million during the first year of service. (TNA)

The State Railway Authority of Thailand discloses its readiness in opening a rail line between Thailand and the People's Democratic Republic of Laos with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn scheduled to take part in the lines inaugural trip on 5 March.

SRT Governor Yuthana Thapcharoen stated that on 5 March HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn would honor the newly completed international train line between Thailand and Laos by taking part in its inaugural trip from Nong Khai Province across the border. The trip will cover a distance of 3.5 kilometers and cross the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. The over 19 million baht train line began construction on 18 October 2006 and is projected to transport 500 people a day on 4 seperate trips. The line however is awaiting the confirmation of an international transport act from the central government.

The SRT is also planning to begin a second phase train line that will travel to Vientiane. The project is expected to be clarified within the year.
