FROM THE MINISTER FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT

   DATE: Tuesday, April 8, 2008

   LONGER HOURS AND MORE SERVICES IN MELBOURNE’S NORTH

   Catching the bus just got easier for Epping, Mill Park, Mill Park Lakes and Bundoora residents with extra services and extended operating hours now in place for bus Routes 564 and 572, Minister for Public Transport, Lynne Kosky, announced today.

   This upgrade in two local bus services is part of a total of 58 bus routes across Melbourne to benefit from extra services.

   “Buses are becoming an increasingly popular mode of transport with bus patronage growing by six per cent in the last year,” Ms Kosky said.

   Lily D’Ambrosio, Member for Mill Park, said for the first time bus route 564 and 572 will run until 9pm on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with a Saturday timetable operating on public holidays and a Sunday timetable operating on Christmas Day and Good Friday.

   “These two bus routes are a vital part of the transport network as they provide strong cross-town links that connect with Epping Train Station and the Bundoora Bus and Tram interchange,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

   ”This is a significant boost in bus services for local residents with a combined 16 additional services on Saturday, 59 new services on Sunday and 65 additional weekday services per week,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

   Danielle Green, Member for Yan Yean, said that with bus Route 572 now running till 9pm every night of the week, Mill Park Lakes’ residents will have better access to local schools, shopping centres, RMIT Uni and the bus and tram interchange.

   ”The extra bus services will provide local residents and commuters with a greater ability to travel to work, to attend medical appointments, to visit family and friends and connect to the train and tram network,” Ms Green said.

   Peter Batchelor, Member for Thomastown, said local residents will now have better access to Epping Plaza and Stables Shopping Centre, Northern Hospital, Epping Railway Station and Bundoora RMIT Bus and Tram Interchange.

   These two bus routes service the following areas:
   · Route 564 – Epping Plaza Shopping Centre to Bundoora RMIT Bus and Tram Interchange
   · Route 572 – Mill Park Lakes Estate to Bundoora RMIT Bus and Tram Interchange

   Route 564 and 572, operated by Dysons Bus Service, have now been extended to:
   · 6am to 9pm on weekdays;
   · 8am to 9pm on Saturdays and public holidays; and
   · 9am to 9pm on Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday.

   Detailed route and timetable information on the new service is available by calling Metlink on 131 638 or visiting http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au.
