Did anyone watch this doco on SBS last Friday, a look at Mumbai's suburban rail network ??
Passengers hanging out doors, way out; passengers riding on the roofs of carriages (overhead electrics!!).
People walking across and along tracks at major stations and in between, seemingly oblivious to trains whizzing by.
Mention was made that the death toll from train accidents was about 3000 people in a 2 year period. Interview with a driver with about 30 years service, thought he had run over "about 65 or 70 people". Loved his explanation of procedures: "if we run over someone we must stop the train, if the body is on the tracks we must pick it up and move it to the side so it doesn't block other trains. We then go to the next station and fill in a report; later they will send someone to pick up the remains...."
