This is Bus route 402 from Thailand.

It is a interurban bus route that operates between Mahachai city and Nakhon Pathom. It passes though a lot of very heavy industral area and mixed land use industral and residential areas. A small part of it operates though the extreme western outer edge of Bangkok.

Route 402 operates from 4am to 8pm 7 days a week. Its frequency is every 10 to 15 minutes. It is not the only route to the areas it passes though. However it is the only direct bus service between the two cities.

It is a very old route and has a rather slack timetable of 2 hours end to end for a 50 odd km long bus route. There are a lot of timing stops on the route. No public timetable for the route exists you just stand and wait for it.

This is an outside shot of a typical route 402 bus.

Now the comparison:

This is Bus route 402 from Melbourne.

It is a short inner city bus route that operates as an inner city cross-town service in the north of Melbourne. It links Footscray railway station and a hospital in east Melbourne. The Melbourne route 402 also passes though some industrial areas in Melbourne’s inner west. It also links up a couple of commuter railway lines in the inner north of Melbourne.

Route 402 operates from 6am to 8.50pm Monday to Friday with buses every 10 minutes at peak and every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes in the evening. Saturday it operates from 6.10am to 8.55pm every 20 to 25 mins. Sunday it operates from 8.40am to 9.10pm.

This is an outside shot of the typical buses used on Route 402.

Note: The Melbourne pictures are used with permission from somebody from railpage. These Melbourne pictures are not the actual buses used on that route but similar ones.

The Similarities between the two different route 402’s:

1. Both operate 7 days a week the Melbourne version has a later start.

2. Both pass though industrial areas.

3. Both have at least one railway station at a terminus.

4. Both use non aircon high floor buses.

Please tell me what you think the differences and similarities are between these routes and which you feel is a better route to use.

If anyone else knows of other route 402’s from around Australia or else where and can post a picture of a similar bus used on that route. Then please tell us about it and compare them to these routes 402.

I think you have better described the similarities and differences between both routes and if one have to choose a better route then from the above comparison it is much more clear that one should choose Bus route 402 from Melbourne if there is no hurry in the early morning otherwise one should choose Bus route 402 from Thailand.
