Many Melb routes don't need any change at all, but some do. Here is the challenge; pick one, two or three near you and describe how they should be changed ( route, frequency, etc) to enable better coordination with other transport (especially trains, but perhaps trams), greater access by those who live in the area (say, no more than 250 meters from a stop) and better use of public subsidies.
I'll start with one - the closest to home- Route 605. Start point should be Gardenvale station, end point is Toorak Station. Frequency to match trains ie 15 minutes to 30 minutes.

My Suggestions are:
Extend route 216 from Brighton beach to Hampton station bus terminal via south rd and hampton street. (Reason give the route a purpose at its southern end and allows bus connections to east west routes. plus a safer night route into and out of Melbourne. )
Extend route 219 from north Brighton to southland via route 823 and thus cancel route 823 current service. (Reason gives the route a purpose allow a high frequency link from Sandringham line to Frankston line and links a major shopping centre directly to the city. again allow bus connections and safer night route to and from Melbourne)
Frequency should be at least ever 15 mins at peak times every 30 mins at off peak and weekends on each of 216 and 219 in there southern half. 3 times that in the western half of these routes which really should be split at queen st in the Melbourne to improve running times.
Increase frequency on routes 811,812,708,822,827,828,825,824 and on weekends and night time on 703 to improve connections and reduce waiting times and to make buses an attractive way to get around at peak times. The minimum frequency would be as follows
(Weekdays Monday to Friday)
5am to 6am every 30 mins
6am to 10am every 15 mins
10am to 3.30pm every 30 mins
3.30pm to 7.30pm every 15 mins
7.30pm to 11pm every 30mins
weekends every 30mins from (6am to 11pm SAT) and (7am to 10pm SUN)
Where higher frequency exists retain this otherwise apply the above. This also applies to all minimum frequency standards routes across Melbourne. This is the minimum useful level for a commuter bus route in Melbourne any less frequent and its not likely to get people to use it.
On a side note also increase frequency of weekend trains from 20 mins to every 15mins between 7am and 10pm will help with better connections. and an increase of weekday night off peak trains to every 15 mins from 7.30pm to 10pm.
Combine the routes 922 and 923 together and run them via Hampton and Brighton again to allow higher frequency and better connections to east west routes. ie at peak the combined route would have every 15 headway and every 30 mins off peak/weekend headway.
Extend route 605 from Gardenvale to Southland shopping centre via Nepean highway. again this would create a purpose for the route and create an alternative way into the inner city from the south east. creates an additional north south link that allows bus to bus transfers along the Nepean highway on the east west routes. will also act as a de facto tramway extension if peak headways are at least every 15 mins.
These extensions are to place a large transfer point and load generator at the end of these old inner city routes that in the long run will make them more useful and create a better network effect on the transport system of the south east area of Melbourne.
Is this going to be helpful in making a difference in transport usage for the future in the south east of melb? |
